Keeping Your Garage Door Safe
You’d be surprised how often people are injured by their garage doors. Over 20,000 people per year. Told you you’d be surprised! It’s important to take a number of routine measures to ensure the safety of yourself and those around you. So, we put together some quick tips for you. Enjoy!
1. Clean Periodically
Performing periodic cleanings will generally allow your garage door to last longer. It makes your door look better and it keeps your door from getting rusted over. You need to be sure to clean all of though, not just the pretty stuff. Any kind of soap or wipes should be fine for this type of maintenance.
2. Watch and Listen
It’s important to recognize that your garage door is one of the largest machines in your home with a lot of moving parts (literally). So, before you hop in your car and blast your music, it would be wise to watch and listen to your door to make sure nothing out of the ordinary is happening. Watching for odd movements of the door, and listening for odd sounds every once and a while can help you catch problems quickly after they happen.
3. Lube It Up
Periodically using a spray or grease to lubricate your door can significantly decrease the chances of having problems with your garage. Remember all those moving parts we just talked about? Yeah, those need to be able to move freely and as easily as possible to ensure your door works perfectly. Also this is a fairly easy thing you can do on occasion to prevent your door from breaking.
4. Check the Tech
Most garage doors have a sensor that will cause the door to roll back up if it’s about to hit something. To check if this is working just grab something you don’t care much about or a brick and place it under the door. If your door doesn’t roll up before it hits the object, then you need a repair. Crazy right?! This could be because your sensor is broken or because you somehow have a stone-age door that didn’t come with one. It is always advised that this reverse functionality be up and running to ensure safety.
